It's mostly dark and the black color is not the best calibrated. (A technical warning: do make your screen brighter/lighter than usual for the first episode. I believe it may be best described as many loosely interconnected theatre plays classical theatre without the constraints of a physical stage. Maybe, the older Gaiman (the comic author and the executive producer of the series) is gently correcting his younger and more brash self? Or maybe the medium of film requires it to be so? No, an action movie it is not. Subtle changes have been made to the series making the theme of this hope for both the individuals and humanity more prominent than it exists in the source material. But all the while there is still hope in there somewhere. The consequences are sad and bad and often downright gruesome. Parents abuse or spoil their children, siblings rival with each other to the point of destroying all bonds and, indeed, each other, lovers control, abandon, gaslight and can't take no for an answer. (David Thewlis deserves at least an Emmy for his performance, by the way!) So, what is The Sandman about then? For the most part it's about how we screw ourselves and our relationships. The most tense scene that left me on edge was two strangers riding in a car and talking about themselves and their familes and pondering the reasons of why humans lie so much and so often. Or even just sit in silence while still interacting with others and giving us all we need to know by the nuanced changing of their gaze. Most of the time, the characters simply walk and talk with each other. It's not about the stunning CGI effects (though there are some). The series also includes a stand-alone prequel novel and a companion book. Originally planned as a six-book series, it now consists of fourteen published novels. It's not about displaying prowess and speed in flashy fighting. The Wheel of Time (abbreviated as WoT by fans) is a bestselling series of epic fantasy novels written by the American author James Oliver Rigney, Jr. This series is most definitely *not* an action flick.
